Fragile Memoirs

Romola Garai and Anya Taylor-Joy lead The Miniaturist cast

The three-part BBC1 thriller will appear on screens later this year after filming wraps in the Netherlands and the UK.

In this 17th century story, Anya Taylor-Joy plays dreamy country teenager Nella Oortman, who moves to Amsterdam to marry wealthy merchant Johannes Brandt, played by Alex Hassell.

Atonement star Romola Garai portrays Johannes’s cold sister Marin while Paapa Essiedu and Hayley Squires appear as the household servants.

When Johannes eventually turns up, he gifts Nella a cabinet replica of their mansion furnished by a mysterious miniaturist, whose tiny creations soon begin mirroring, and even predicting, reality.

“I immediately fell in love with Nella’s resilience and am so looking forward to telling her story and helping to bring this magical book to life,” said Anya, 20.

Romola added: “I’m so happy to be part of this superb adaptation of Jessie Burton’s exquisite, genre bending novel … Marin is a character with an extraordinary journey of true complexity and depth.”

The Miniaturist is produced by Gethin Scourfield with The Forge’s Kate Sinclair and George Faber, and is directed by Guillem Morales with a script adapted by John Brownlow.
