BBC cancels drama The Last Post after just one series

The Last Post, BBC1’s period drama set in Aden in 1965 at the twilight of Empire and starring Jessica Raine, has been axed after just one series, RadioTimes.com reveals.

The six-part drama was created by Bafta-winning writer Peter Moffatt and aired from October to December 2017.

Set in the swinging 60s, The Last Post followed a unit of British Royal Military Police and their families in Aden (Yemen) and featured Call the Midwife’s Jessica Raine and The Crown’s Ben Miles. Raine played Alison, a woman ahead of her time who railed against her stifling marriage. The drama’s other stars included Jessie Buckley and Stephen Campbell Moore.

When it aired, Moffatt described the show as portraying: “Men full of vim, vigour and a desire to be heroes in a situation where that isn't always possible; alongside young women who are starting to feel the emancipation of the Sixties and a sense of new freedoms but who are living in a constrained setting where their role is supposed to be merely supportive.

“This was my parents' world and one I have wanted to write about all my career,” he added.
